How to look after your mattress

The life expectancy of your mattress greatly depends on how you look after it, so here’s what you need to know about mattress care to protect it against wear and tear and keep it in good shape as long as possible.

The importance of clean mattress:

A study of 3,000 people found that one in three would rather sleep on the floor than in a bed with an unclean mattress. It's also been shown that sleeping on an unclean bed is more likely to lead to respiratory problems, allergies and asthma. If you have a pet who sleeps in the bed with you, it's even more important because they can carry all sorts of bacteria and microbes that could make your allergies worse. Keeping your mattresses clean is essential for health reasons alone, but there are other benefits too - like saving money by avoiding expensive dry cleaning costs. All you need is some simple household items and some time every few weeks or so.

How to choose the right mattress:

The first thing you should do when looking for a new mattress is set yourself a budget. Mattresses can range from $100 up to $2000+, so it's important that you have an idea of how much you're willing to spend before you start shopping. A general rule of thumb is the more expensive the bed, the longer its lifespan will be, but if cost is an issue then there are still plenty of affordable options out there. You can also save money by not buying a bed in-store and instead buy it online where prices tend to be cheaper than in stores due to competition between retailers and lower overheads (ie. no physical store costs). Another way to save money is by purchasing a used mattress.

How to care for your mattress:
Bed builders also provide precautions on how to take care of your bed and mattress when you purchase it, some of these are given below:

1) Remove any objects that you may have on the mattress. This can be pillows, blankets, or even clothes.

2) Flip the mattress over and inspect it for stains or tears. If there are any stains, treat them with water as soon as possible. For tears, contact a professional for repairs.

3) Carefully remove any stains from the surface of your mattress using a dry towel and white vinegar. Place a clean towel underneath the stain and pour white vinegar on top of it. Allow it to soak for about ten minutes before scrubbing gently with another wet towel in circular motions until all traces of dirt are gone from the surface of the mattress. Repeat if necessary with more vinegar until all dirt is removed from the surface of your mattress.

Cons of not taking care of mattress:

If you don't take care of your mattress, it can become filled with dust mites and other allergens that will make you sick. Plus, the harder your bed is, the less likely you are to sleep well. Not only does a hard surface cause muscle pain and stiffness, but it also causes pressure on the spine which can be extremely uncomfortable. A mattress that is too soft doesn't support all of the body's weight, so it makes for a very uncomfortable night's rest. The best way to prevent these issues is by taking care of your mattress properly and regularly.
